LD-138-1-29-2015-Joel_JohnsonAt the February 17 Western Maine Labor Council meeting, Joel Johnson from the Maine Center for Economic Policy will give a special presentation about the Governor’s budget proposal. If you have followed the news, you know that Governor LePage has proposed sweeping changes to our tax structure that will impact who is paying taxes and how much they are paying. The presentation will last approximately 15 minutes, will include a slide show and handouts, and will be followed by a question and answer period.

Joel gave this presentation to the Maine AFL-CIO Executive Board in January and those present found it informative and easy to understand. Joel is the MCEP Economist and when the budget proposal was released, he spent many hours reading and analyzing it to figure out how it will work, whom it will affect, and how it will affect them. Of course it will affect all of us in one way or another, so please join us on February 17 to become an informed participant in the debate that already surrounds the governor’s proposed changes.

Joel Johnson is an economist on staff at the Maine Center for Economic Policy. He worked as an economist at the Maine State Planning Office where he conducted research, economic forecasting, and census data analysis and served as the primary staff member for the state’s Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission. He has a master’s in resource economics and policy from the University of Maine, where he specialized in econometric and statistical analysis. Joel now serves on the Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission and is a Registered Maine Guide.

The meeting will be at 6:00 pm, Tuesday, February 17 at IBEW Local 567 union hall, 238 Goddard Road in Lewiston and will begin with Joel’s presentation, followed by regular council business. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
